For the love of cannabis.

After years spent perfecting the product and growing their industry knowledge, the Terps team decided it was time to lay down roots and open a line of boutique cannabis dispensaries. Terps is a premier adult-use dispensary catered towards both beginner and established consumers. The dispensaries have a unique insight and expertise into cannabis terpenes – the organic compounds in each strain that influence the smell, flavor, and effects of the bud. 

Building the brand from the ground up was an exciting challenge. We worked closely with the team to align on how they wanted to be positioned in the rapidly evolving market and who their target audience was. Our mission was to craft a brand that would support the growing company with a premium, yet approachable feel.

The Approach

As a budding brand, we started by conducting stakeholder interviews to learn what makes Terps, Terps. From there, we did a competitive deep dive to see what other dispensaries in Massachusetts and beyond were doing and began strategizing ways to help Terps stand apart. We worked through audience personas to pinpoint the range of customers the company would serve.


The research phase led us to the conclusion that the quality of product and robust knowledge of terpenes were what set Terps apart from the rest. My team crafted moodboards with this in mind, and ultimately decided on a visual identity with a premium, timeless feel that was rooted in Terp’s passion for terpenes.

Visual Identity

The base of Terp’s visual identity starts with the treatment of the different terpenes. We crafted a flexible system for treating terpenes that marries thin-line gold icons with playful and flexible pattern blocks. The serif logo gives the identity and established and timeless feel with a signature gold ‘T’ logo symbol that represented the weaving together of the six primary terpenes. The palette draws from the colors of nature with a dark grey and gold to push the feeling of quality and health. This is not the cannabis your cousin grew in their basement. Like the dispensary, the identity was carefully crafted based on research and insight of the industry.

 
 
 
 

The System

Once the visual identity was finalized, we began building out brand collateral. A custom website was designed to introduce customers to Terps, educate them about terpenes, and lead them to place an order with ease and simplicity. We worked with architects to decide how to bring the brand to life in the physical space and with the director of retail to ensure the voice and visuals were understood by all budtenders. We wanted customers to know they were in good hands when buying with Terps and to know that they were purchasing unique and high quality products.
